Does it hurt? No, not really.. You should feel something like a tingle or tickle or even a little zing. Anything more than that is too much and should be communicated to your acupuncturist versus saying nothing and enduring the treatment through gritted and gnashing teeth. Gritted and gnashing teeth are extremely counter to our goal of a calm healing experience. Most people actually find the calm healing experience starts immediately upon needle insertion.
Acupuncture results improve with frequent treatments which is why we have made the rates so affordable. We want you to be able to come enough times to get better! Everyone is different but we should be able gauge the trajectory of your progress within 4 to 5 treatments. Family history, lifestyle habits, length of time with health issue, all influence results. Here is a general guideline to estimate length of treatment:
Health issue for years takes months to treat.
Health issue for months takes weeks to treat.
Health issue for weeks takes days to treat.
Must I Believe Preacher!?
First off, the acupuncturist is not a preacher or guru, be wary of those preacher/guru dudes. Second, the merits of a positive attitude, deep faith, a strong spiritual foundation, etc...are unquestionable; even so, acupuncture requires no conscious commitment of will or belief from you to be effective. You only have to believe it enough to show up a few times in order to give yourself a chance to see positive changes. We stole that last part from Andy Wegman who wrote a great book called, "Why Did You Put That Needle There?" Perfect practical answers can be found here to your other acupuncture questions.
